20 GHz Bandwidth 3.84 dBi Gain InP On-chip Antenna for 300GHz Wireless Communication

A broadband antenna that can be used for a phased array in the 300-GHz band applicable to ultra-high speed wireless transmission system such as Beyond 5G or 6G is proposed. The antenna is composed of a split ring resonator and a patch antenna and has broadband radiation characteristics. Its small size of 1/3-wavelength means it is promising for use in a phased array. The antenna is fabricated on a 60-μm-thick InP substrate and the return characteristics and gain are evaluated. Comparison of experimental and simulated results confirm the operating bandwidth of 20 GHz (290 - 310 GHz) and there is good agreement of the two gain results in the normal direction with an average error of 0.86 dBi. Also the average peak gain of the simulated result is 3.84 dBi at the operating frequency band. The results confirmed the broadband and good gain characteristics of the antenna.
