Implementation of Direction and Velocity Measurement Algorithm for Moving Target Based on FPGA

Currently, almost all the Doppler radars work with frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) and finish the direction and velocity measurements with complex algorithm.[1] This paper proposes an implementation of algorithm that direction and velocity measurement for single moving target based on FPGA. The method only needs the radars work with continue wave (CW); the continue wave echo change the frequency due to the Doppler effect and the Doppler frequency shift can be measured with the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) directly; it calculates the direction of moving target based on the phase difference between the two received signals, the phase difference also can be measured by FFT. The methods mentioned in the paper can be implemented with the Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA), FPGA can accelerate calculating speed and satisfy the needs of miniaturization. The effectiveness of method proposed in this paper is validated through comparing the measurement results with the actual data finally. The system can be applied to the indoor position and anti-collision radar, it can improve the safety of vehicle when the drivers ignored the blind area.
