Speed Control of Brushless Induction Excited Synchronous Motor (BINSYM)

The Brushless INduction excited SYnchronous Motor (BINSYM) is a combination of synchronous and induction machines housed in one core and wound for different numbers of poles to achieve magnetic decoupling. The machine is brush-less and permanent magnet-less. This is developed as a fallback option due to different challenges posed by PM motors. In this paper the magnetic decoupling principle is briefly explained. A possible layout of the machine is presented and steady-state analysis has been carried out to select the suitable operating zone for motoring mode of operation of BINSYM. Vector control algorithms have been implemented for both main synchronous and excitation machines for speed control. A new control scheme for below-base-speed operation is proposed. Proper and optimized design of the excitation machine (IM) can be achieved by the proposed excitation control scheme to reduce the core-loss of BINSYM. MATLAB/Simulink based simulation results are presented to clearly demonstrate the effectiveness and advantage of the proposed drive system.
