A New Switched Capacitor Nine-Level Inverter with Quadruple Voltage Boosting and Capacitor Voltage Balancing Capabilities

This paper proposes a new switched capacitor nine-level multi-level inverter (MLI) with an quadruple voltage boosting and a self-capacitor voltage balancing capability. For attaining the voltage boosting, capacitors are employed instead of independent DC sources. The usage of capacitors results in the voltage boosting which further helps in obtaining the more number of levels in the output voltage. The proposed MLI topology can generate a nine-level output voltage using only a single DC voltage source and a minimal number of other components. The proposed MLI topology, the Nine-Level Quadruple Boost Inverter (NLQBI), achieves the higher voltage boosting through its unique structure and balances the capacitor charges through a proficient switching sequence. The main tenet in the proposed topology is switched capacitors (SCs) are connected both in series and parallel in the conduction path to patronage the voltage boosting. The simple Phase Opposition Disposition Multicarrier Pulse Width Modulation (POD-MCPWM) technique is used to corroborate the merits of the suggested MLI topology. The proposed nine level topology is simulated using MATLAB and the same is also tested in a designed prototype. The paper also provides a formulaic comparison amid the proposed topology and the other akin prevailing topologies of contemporary literatures.
