Resonant Control Based Three-phase On-Board EV Charger under Distorted Grid Conditions

High power EV charging and maintaining good power quality across a three-phase distribution grid under peak load condition are rather challenging to achieve. This paper depicts a resonant converter based three-phase bi-directional electric vehicle (EV) charging scheme under distorted grid voltage conditions. The presented control algorithm relies on the basic principle of the decoupled double synchronous frame (DDSRF) based current control theory, to transfer voltage amplitude and phase-angle related information into sequential components. An independent control of the grid sequential components during severe grid distortion ensures the improved power quality at the point of common coupling. A bi-directional charging architecture based on an isolated DC-DC converter is also discussed to describe the fast charging phenomenon during grid voltage unbalancing. Simulation results are also presented to validate a Level-II charger and the present control algorithm against several grid power quality-related issues.
