A Dynamic CAD Model for Phase Change Material (PCM) Switches

Phase Change Material (PCM) switches are undergoing rapid development and integration. Static models in on and off states can be obtained using lumped element models or electromagnetic simulations. This paper presents an electrothermal model allowing to mimic the change in resistivity in the PCM material, using common CAD software elements. The proposed model allows simulating the response of the switch to control pulses and model the complete switching behaviour of PCM switches, and can be easily integrated into common CAD software. One of the main application of this model is the design of integrated bias circuitry for monolithic integration of PCM RF switches into CMOS fabrication process.
