Characterization of Single Frequency Networks for Passive Radar Applications

In order to use DAB and DVB broadcast signals for passive radar applications, a precedent characterization of the transmitter networks is required, which can be compared to the registration process for multi sensor fusion of active radars. The broadcast stations are grouped into single frequency networks, which radiate the same signal and are synchronized in time and frequency. In order to avoid unfavorable interference conditions at important coverage areas, the individual transmitter signals can be delayed additionally. These delays have to be estimated in order to achieve correct bistatic range measurements, which is required for target tracking. The delay estimation can be done by measuring the impulse response at different locations in manifold variants.
