Efficient Secondary Power Conversion Techniques in Multi-output DC-DC Converters

In this paper, two efficient secondary power conversion schemes are described to meet stringent load regulation in multi-output DC-DC converters with high load current requirements of the order 1A to 4A. Presently for space usage, conventional linear regulators are used in DC-DC converters to meet the output voltage regulation over wide range of load variation. However, linear regulator scheme is inefficient, particularly at high output current, and provides poor load regulation at the load end due to voltage drop across line wires. The efficiency and regulation can be enhanced by incorporating two different techniques presented in this paper. In the first approach, Synchronous Rectification in high current outputs of DC-DC converter followed by remote voltage sensing of Low Drop-Out regulator is described. The second approach depicts usage of miniaturized Point of Load converter at the load end. Both techniques were implemented in the EPC and validated the effectiveness of the reported techniques against the conventional design technique.
