Distributed Generation Areas: Making Adjustments for Load Parameters

This paper analyzes emergencies where a shutdown of core processes at a facility entailed significant losses. It proves that one of the key factors behind such emergencies lies in a faulty design, namely when wrong calculations of electromechanical transients were made to integrate distributed generation (DG) facilities in an internal grid. In such grids, transients are common for generator sets (GS) and loads, while the transient parameters are in correlation with the GS and load specifications. The paper shows that using static rather than dynamic response of loads created by the major users (i.e. electrically powered equipment) is unacceptable when computing transients for DG areas. It further proves that stricter accuracy requirements to modeling the major users will help avoid making significant errors in calculations or adopting unreasonable solutions with respect to the reliability of electricity delivery. The paper thus presents guidelines on how to model the load and calculate the parameters of industrial areas that contain DG facilities.
