Detailed and Reduced-order LP Thermal Models for Open Self -ventilated Induction Motors Used in Traction Applications

This paper deals with a detailed lumped parameter model for thermal analysis of an open self-ventilated induction motor used in heavy railway traction applications. The thermal model of the motor is described in detail. Moreover, a comparison between the different reduced-order model versions and the detailed one is performed, and the corresponding results are presented. The modeling methods are validated comparing computed critical spots' temperatures with the correspondent measured ones on a self-ventilated traction motor chosen for the model verification and tested in the laboratory. The results show a good agreement between the developed thermal model and measurements.
