Delay and Energy Consumption Analysis for M2M Communication with Data Aggregation

Machine-to-Machine (M2M) communications have emerged as a flourishing technology for varieties of applications with specific delay, throughput and power consumption requirements. Data aggregation (DA) is considered as an effective technique for M2M communication since the M2M applications usually generate short messages. In this paper, we consider a buffer based DA in two-hop wireless communication architecture for M2M communication. We develop analytical models of power consumption and end-to-end average delay of packets and then validate the models via simulation. By means of the results generated by the analytical models, we demonstrate that DA significantly reduces the energy consumption and the average delay of the packets is close to the half of the buffering time at the aggregators. The average packet delay of the DA based M2M communication system is found to be higher than the non-aggregation based system. However, the average packet delay of the DA based M2M communication system remains within an acceptable range.
