Transient Performance Analysis of Buck Boost Converter Using Various PID Gain Tuning Methods

Nowadays, PID kind controllers are used extensively in the industries because of their prominent impact on system control performance. Generally, there are many PID controller tuning methods available for different systems and applications in the literature that makes burdensome for the utilizers to get familiar with all those tuning algorithms for a given case. Among various applications, power electronic converters are one of the typical application, where the converter efficacy mainly depends upon the controller tuning. Especially when these converters are used for renewable energy, the controller design dominates all other factors deciding the system efficacy. With this motivation, this paper investigates all the key controller tuning methods available in the literature and performs a comprehensive analysis on their usefulness to the buck-boost converter. Various time-domain and frequency-domain responses are plotted, and their performance metrics are computed. From these quantitative result, the best tuning method that can be used to design the controller for the buck-boost converter is concluded. MATLAB-Simulink software is used for the modelling and analysis of the overall system with respect to various controller tuning methods.
