Optimal Design of an Axisymmetric Electromagnetic Actuator

This paper presents a detailed procedure for the optimization of the electromagnetic actuator. Based on the accurate electromagnetic field distribution obtaining from the finite element analysis, the electromagnetic force on the mover is accurately computed with the Maxwell stress tensor method. With accurately obtained electromagnetic force, the particle swarm optimization method is applied to achieve the maximum electromagnetic force under the geometry and current density limitations. Two different optimized candidates are obtained and it is shown that they are fit for different applications.
