Statistical Analysis of Wind Power Using Weibull Distribution to Maximize Energy Yield

This paper presents Wind Turbine (WT) power-speed characteristics. It then discusses Weibull distribution along with critical wind speeds relevant to the analysis of wind turbines feasibility studies. The significance of this paper is that it 1. corrects some common misconceptions about the power coefficients of WTs and 2. mathematically shows how comparing different potential areas for integrating WTs using average wind speed might sometimes be misleading. Our results indicate that to maximize total energy yield, matching the rated WT wind speed with maximum energy-carrying wind speed is a good rule-of-thumb to choose the ‘optimal’ rated speed of the WT.
