A Scale to measure behavioral change regarding sanitation post implementation of sanitation programs

Background: Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM) was launched by Govt. of India to eliminate Open Defecation, Manual scavenging and start Solid waste management by construction of individual, public and community toilets, solid waste management and through Information, Education, communication and Public Awareness (IEC & PA). Theoretical perspective: Research in social marketing shows that it not easy to bring the behavioral changes without understanding the social and physical environment affecting that behavior. People do not want to change their behavior because they want to operate from their comfort zone of value system. Research Proposal: The purpose of this project is to develop a reliable as well as valid measurement instruments that can be used for studying the sanitation behaviors and outcomes field research setting. Reason: We believe this will help the various Local bodies and State governments in formulating the campaigns that will directly address the negative attitude and beliefs of the people. Thus, the output if this research will be useful for policy making. Scope and Place of research: We intend to base our study in Odisha rural population, since Odisha has been not faring well in implementation of SBM. The study will involve field work, focused group discussion, field surveys and projection techniques to bring the belief system in targeted sample population of Odisha.
