Analytical calculation of fundamental wave and harmonic characteristics for MMC

The modular multilevel converter (MMC) has been widely used in large-scale electrical systems. The harmonic characteristics of MMC are of great concern to the system stability. Analyses on fundamental wave and harmonic characteristics are performed in this article. The result shows that the carrier frequency is essential to the total harmonic distortion of the voltage, and raising the modulation amplitude can increase the fundamental wave, while decrease THD rate. The simulation results of this paper promise to have many practical engineering applications.
