Performance Improvement Using Illuminator Cognition Technique for Passive Bistatic Radar

We propose a processing scheme for passive bistatic radar(PBR) in co-channel interference scenarios with multi-transmit single-receive topology based on frequency modulated broadcasting transmitters. We separate the direct signal of each co-frequency transmitter utilizing blind source separation (BSS) and perform clutter suppression in the surveillance channel exploiting signal-fast-time adaptive processing (SFTAP) in BSS domain. To solve the permutation problem of BSS, an adaptive canceler based on recursive least square criterion (RLS) is used to the output of the BSS and the digital beam forming beam. The target detection problem in presence of co-frequency interferences and strong ground clutter is transformed into a conventional passive bistatic radar with multiple illuminators via the above processing. Based on waveform selection in terms of the illuminator bandwidth, we propose an approach to select a better illuminator to accomplish target detection. The validity of the proposed approach is tested by numerical simulations.
