Applications of Non-Intrusive Load Monitoring Towards Smart and Sustainable Power Grids: A System Perspective

Due to enormous technological development, the electricity market has generally been in a transitional phase for the last two decades. The power research community is actively involved in proposing numerous techniques towards a smart and sustainable power grid systems. Further, the involvement of many players in the energy market encourage a healthy competition that drives different utility providers to offer many promising applications to retain and enhance their consumers' base. An Efficient and interactive energy monitoring application is not only inevitable for future power grid system but also useful for all the stakeholders of a power grid system. In this context, this research work presents a brief overview of energy monitoring techniques with a focus on non-intrusive load monitoring (NILM). This research work mainly discusses on the numerous applications of non-intrusive load monitoring systems. For this purpose, a comprehensive systematic literature review has been carried out to get an insight into the present status of NILM applications. Furthermore, a detail discussion on the role of NILM applications in the context of different stakeholders of the power grid system has been presented. This paper also provides a suggestion regarding the outlook of the NILM system in terms of actionable feedback towards energy efficiency and conservation.
