An electrochemical simulation study of temperature dependent diffusivity on discharge characteristics of NMC cell

Depending on diffusivity of Li ion, the usable capacity varies as a function of temperature and C-rates. Here, using pseudo 2D (P2D) electrochemical modeling, we have investigated the trend in diffusivity of Li ion in cathode material on discharge characteristics of NMC cell at different C-rates for different temperatures. The diffusivity is two orders of magnitude higher at 45°C and one order of magnitude lower at 0°C compared than that of 25°C. At -30°C, the diffusivity is drastically low due to slower reaction kinetics, two orders of magnitude lower compared to that of 25°C. The effect of C-rate on diffusivity is significant for subzero temperatures than temperatures above 0°C. Our simulation can be used to predict the cell performances at any operating condition for automotive applications.
