Radiation-Resistant Optical Cable for Space Technology Objects

The problems of import substitution, the expansion of the electronic component base of Russian industry in recent years are increasingly heard in the circles of developers of technical solutions. The cable industry, in particular, the development and production of optical communication cables, was no exception. The main problem here is the manufacture of optical fiber with the necessary properties on the basis of Russian enterprises without the use of imported materials. This is a problem for the reason that, due to the lack of the necessary materials and technological base for the production of specialized fibers, it is easier and cheaper to purchase imported optical fiber than to establish production of your own. However, specialists of JSC “VNIIKP”, together with Institute of Radio Engineering and Electronics named after V.A. Kotelnikov of the Russian Academy of Sciences and JSC «Concern «Central Research Institute «Electropribor», developed and first put into serial production a radiation-resistant single-mode optical fiber operating at two wavelengths, on the basis of which an optical cable with the corresponding properties was made. The cable is miniature, its outer diameter is 3.0 mm, weight 8.5 kg / km, and is designed to provide communication at space technology facilities. The extended temperature range of application, resistance to low atmospheric pressure, ionizing radiation and various mechanical stresses, is confirmed by the results of relevant tests and allows you to use this cable in accordance with the intended use.
