Partial Discharge Propagation Characteristics of HV Cables Based on A Novel Inner Sensor

A novel Partial Discharge (PD) inner sensor, which is a metal electrode, developed by the research group of the authors, equipped on the outer semiconducting layer of the 110kV High Voltage (HV) Polyethylene (XLPE) cable, is proven with high sensitivity and anti-interference ability. However, the propagation characteristics and laws of PD signals in the 110kV HV XLPE cable equipped with the inner sensors are unknown. Therefore, the propagation characteristics of PD signals based on the inner sensor was presented in the paper. Firstly, a mathematical model of PD signal was proposed, and then a simulation model of the 110kV HV XLPE cables equipped with inner sensors was established by PSCAD software. Secondly, the PD propagation characteristics in the simulation model was analyzed. Finally, the PD propagation characteristics experiment based on the inner sensors was carried out. The results showed that the error percentage between the amplitude attenuate coefficient of the PD signal measured by experiment and that measured by simulation is 3.73%. The PD propagation characteristics based on the inner sensor presented in the paper will contribute to provide a reference for the layout scheme of inner sensors in 110kV HV XLPE cables.
