A Novel Fault Section Identification Algorithm for a Series-Compensated Transmission Line

This work presents the fault section identification approach for series compensated transmission line using both sides current information. In this paper, a simplified and novel idea for fault part identification is developed, which requires only faulted phase current data from both the terminals of the series compensated line. The fault section identification can be achieved by comparing the area of the fault current transient. The area that lies between the peak and the lower threshold of the fault transient of the current waveform is calculated. The fault current transient is obtained by applying the moving average filter to the current signal. The method is verified for 400 kV, 300 km line using PSCAD/EMTDC simulations. The method is validated using different fault resistances, fault inception angles and locations and the proposed method can identify the faulted section accurately.
