Extended-range Forecasts of Power Grid Ice Accretion in Southern China: Case Studies

The acceleration of wide-spread ice on transmission linescan cause a large number of tower collapse and line breakage, which threatens the essential security of power grid. The forecast of transmission line ice accretion could guide the deployment of anti-icing equipment in advance and reduce the economic losses caused by ice disasters. In this paper, the relationship between five ice storm events over southern China and Stratospheric planetary wave (PW) anomalies was studied by synthetic analysis. It is found that planetary wave activities will abruptly increase within 10 – 15 days before the ice storm events. Furthermore, a method of forecasting ice storm events over southern China by using such planetary wave anomalies is proposed.
