A Prototype System for Optical Visualisation and Microwave Ablation of Soft Tissue

This paper focuses on the development of a prototype system to ablate early stage cancerous tissue within the ear, nose, throat and lungs using microwave energy at 5.8GHz. A prototype structure for a hollow coaxial cable, microstrip impedance transformer and antenna have been designed and simulated. Use of a hollow channel will allow for a CMOS image sensor to be installed to allow simultaneous visualisation and energy delivery along with a steering mechanism to produce a self contained diagnostic and treatment device.
