Design of a W-band Endfire Directional Tapered Slot Antenna on Silicon Substrate

A compact W-band endfire directional tapered slot antenna on a single silicon substrate (relative dielectric permittivity of 11.9) has been presented in this paper. The proposed antenna is constructed by using coplanar waveguide (CPW) to wide slot transition. The simulated results show that our proposed antenna can achieve a broad bandwidth from 88.7 to 97.5 GHz with respect to S11 <; -10 dB and a fine impedance matching at the whole operating band. Good radiation directivity to the endfire direction is obtained and high antenna gain more than 6 dBi over the operating frequency is also observed. Our proposed antenna has advantages of simple structure, low profile, high directivity and compatibility with the existing commercial complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) technology, making it useful in many millimeter-wave (mmW) applications such as mmW radar, mmW wireless communication and mmW image processing.
