Frequency Selective Surface (FSS) Realization in Terahertz (THz) Range for 6G Initiative Studies

In need of looking for a wider spectrum in future communication technology especially in 6G, Terahertz (THz) spectrum has been explored to counter this limitation. Therefore, this paper discusses FSS realization in terahertz (THz) range for 6G initiative study. This paper provides a parametric study in order to provide a proper guideline in designing a diamond slot FSS with bandpass characteristics for future 6G applications. It provides a significant understanding of the design strategy of the FSS, which manipulates the physical dimensions such as periodicity of the FSS, length, and width of the diamond slots, and thickness of the copper. The analysis has been performed in order to observe the effect of the change in certain parameters of the FSS towards its transmission and the bandwidth characteristics. In this work, a diamond slot is modeled on a planar structure of Roger Duroid 5880 substrate with thickness of 127 μm using Computer Simulation Technology (CST). Simulated results have shown a magnitude of 0.971 transmittances between 0.8 to 1 THz frequency range. Moreover, photoplotter and PCB fabrication techniques are implied in this work for the realization of diamond slot structure FSS. Besides the limitation of fabrication technique to produce microstructure pattern, measured results still show a good agreement with simulated results by achieving a magnitude of 0.956 transmittances despite a small shift in frequency towards 1.07 THz.
