A Game-Theoretic Approach to Analyzing Equilibria in Coupled Power and Transportation Networks

This paper establishes a systematic framework to analyze the joint charging and routing behavior of electric vehicles (EVs) and how they affect both the power and transportation systems. Fast charging enables EVs to re-charge at public charging stations during a trip, thereby redistributing the charging load and traffic flow at the same time. Finding an equilibrium in the coupled networks is challenging because the traffic flow is incentivized by the charging price, which changes as the electric power flow redistributes. We adopt a game-theoretic approach for modeling and propose a decentralized algorithm to solve the optimization problem. Compared with other interdisciplinary studies, this research is the first to consider the stochasticity in drivers' choices. The numerical results indicate a strong relationship between the algorithm convergence rate and the coupling strength of the networks.
