Low cost 11kV network 3 phase cable current measurement using a novel coil device

Growth in embedded generation and the anticipated consumer uptake of electric vehicles (EVs) present new challenges for Distribution Network Operators (DNO's) to develop and operate their networks under optimum conditions. Data from maximum demand indicators in distribution substations is inadequate to understand the spread of demand over time. Retrofit datalogging solutions are available for substation monitoring, but cost typically >£1200, which would be difficult to justify for all 11kV distribution substations. This paper looks at the development of a novel coil measurement system which is a low cost alternative designed for measuring current on three phase cables at a cost of less than £100. This paper looks at the theory and the staged development of different alternative implementations.
