Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) Platforms - An Evaluation Model

Companies are facing an impact of technology transformation, especially after the advent of the fourth industrial revolution known as Industry 4.0. This transformation is not a simple journey, to be able to embrace it good planning and the choice of the right technologies is crucial. Currently the volume of data collected by industrial internet of things (IIoT) applications is impressive, making it a challenge to offer platforms with adequate capacity and performance. There are several IIoT platforms in the market and before making the decision of which ones to adopt, a detailed analysis of its strengths and weaknesses is important. This study proposes a model of evaluation of IIoT platforms on-premises and cloud based to assist companies in the choice that best fits their needs and validates it empirically. Results showed that despite common sense, the current Cloud Computing and IIoT providers have very different technological characteristics in different development stages.
