Microstrip Patch Antennas, Overcoming Deficiencies and Realizing Unexpected Performances

The historical development of microstrip patch antenna is reviewed. It is indicated that it resulted from the problem of radiation loss in printed microstrip lines and microwave circuits, which deteriorated their performance. On the other hand, enhancing the radiation, developed it to be one of the most useful and dominant antennas in wireless communications and sensor applications. Its planar configuration is ideally suited for miniaturization and printed fabrication and has potential for further influence of the electronic device and communication technology advancements. The main steps in its development are highlighted and will be discussed in detail during the presentation.
