Practical Analysis of Teleprotection Schemes based on IEC 61850-90-1 using Real-Time Simulation

Teleprotection Schemes were developed aiming to improve the performance of transmission line protection, which is achieved through an appropriate choice of them. Through real-time simulation, this paper brings a practical analysis and a comprehensive view of the main aspects related to the commonly applied Teleprotection Schemes, highlighting the minimum requirements established by the Brazilian National System Operator (ONS) and providing an aid in the selection of the scheme to be used. Considering the fact that operation and logic particularities of actual relays can generate better performances, two protective relays of two reputable manufacturers are used in this analysis. Tests are carried out using a conventional Teleprotection Scheme structure and a structure based on the communication mechanisms exposed in IEC 61850-90-1 standard, providing a survey of the benefits and contributing to the incentive for a new version of the standard to cover a standardized way of implementing communication between substations.
