Control of variable speed ethanol generator set with battery bank

This paper presents a simplified spark ignited internal combustion engine model suitable for designing the speed and battery current control of an ethanol variable speed genset with battery bank. The equilibrium points of the nonlinear model calculates the required throttle opening to generate the desired engine torque, for a wide range of operating points, linearizing the model. This paper describes an alternative control approach to manage the genset, where the speed is controlled by the electric generator and the battery current is controlled by the internal combustion engine. The performance of this proposed strategy is evaluated using and extensive experimental evaluation.
