Compensation Device for Low Voltage Hybrid Electrical Grids (CA/CD)

Hybrid low voltage residential grids have arisen from the need to have sources that supply energy to the increasing number of electronic equipment that utilizes energy in DC form, in addition to facilitate the inclusion of supply systems based on renewable energy sources. Nonetheless, it has been observed that this type of novel electrical grids has power quality problems caused by the large number of electronic devices that incorporates, not to mention the low performance that they could present. For this reason, this paper proposes the utilization of a hybrid central converter responsible for distributing electric power in both AC and DC forms, to a low voltage grid. The simultaneous generation of AC and DC voltages is guaranteed by using a three-phase matrix converter controlled by the Direct Space Vector Pulse Width Modulation (DSVPWM) strategy. Also, in order to carry out the load voltage regulation and improvement of power quality of the generated signals, a Proportional Resonant (PR) controller is implemented. Performance of the proposed hybrid converter is verified through a series of numerical simulations carried out in Matlab® software, where different types of loads are considered. Finally, the dynamic operation of the device is validated by comparing the resulting load voltages when the system operates with and without controller.
