Fractional PID Controller Tuned for Aerodynamic Missile System with Real-Coded Genetic Algorithm

Fractional calculus can provide higher performance extension for fractional order proportional integral derivative (FOPID) controllers that show better performance for nonlinear time-varying systems. Compared with traditional PID controllers, the difficulty of designing FOPID parameters is increased because its derivative and integral orders are fractional numbers rather than integers. To better tune the parameters of the FOPID controller, a method for directly tuning 5 parameters of FOPID controller based on real-coded genetic algorithm (RCGA) is developed and is applied to the control of an aerodynamic missile (AM) system. These parameters to be optimized are represented as floating point numbers. The dynamic model of an AM system for axial motion is also presented. The simulation results of this AM system show that a fractional PID controller designed via the proposed RCGA has good performance.
