Calculation of Wire Breaking Rate of Medium-Voltage Distribution Line due to Lightning

Lightning outage rate calculation is important to implement effective lightning countermeasures for medium voltage distribution lines, therefore, many studies of flashover calculation due to indirect and direct lightning strokes have been carried out. In these studies, flashover is regarded as an outage. On the other hand, observation results have suggested that flashover does not necessarily lead to lightning failure. In this paper, we proposed a procedure for calculating the rate of wire breaking of medium-voltage distribution lines considering arc melting characteristics of insulate wire and estimated the wire breaking rates of model distribution lines.
