Formation of Hard Magnetic FePt Based Films on Amorphous Silicon Oxide and Sapphire Substrates by RTA

Ordering and structural transformations as well as the magnetic properties of the ordered tetragonal FePt phase formed by rapid thermal annealing (RTA) of the Pt/Fe layered stacks on amorphous silicon oxide and sapphire substrates were investigated. It is shown that a higher level of compressive stresses in the Pt/Fe layered films on the silicon oxide substrate promotes the ordering process, improves magnetic properties of the films and leads to a higher number of grains oriented in the [001] direction perpendicular to the film plane.
