Static Excitation of the 7.5 MW Synchronous Motor for Compressor Drive

In this paper, the static excitation system is presented, designed for a compressor implemented by means of the 7.5 MW synchronous motor. Advantages of the new digitally controlled static excitation system are outlined, together with all major control and protection functions that it includes. The response traces are presented, measured during the synchronous motor commissioning.
