Adaptive Control of Power Electronics Load Considering User Intention in Islanded Microgrid

Load control and management is a significant component for a microgrid with intermittent renewable power. In this paper, application of the flexible power electronics loads (FPELs) to balance the distributed power generations and loads demand in islanded microgrid is discussed. An adaptive control considering the user intention is proposed to make FPELs actively participate in the supply and demand balance of microgrid. In the proposed control, the frequency of microgrid is used as a control variable which indicates the balance between supply and demand. The multi-threshold frequency values are preset according the FPELs intention. The FPELs can regular their consumptions according to the microgrid operation and the user's intention. It can make the FPELs to automatically participate into the supply and demand balance and maintain the FPELs in proper operation. With the user intention, it can reduce the influence on load operation. In the control, the FPELs can automatically follow the microgrid operation without communication. Consequently, communication links and energy storage reservation can be reduced. Simulation studies are conducted via Matlab and the results show the effectiveness of the proposed control scheme.
