Discharge-Based Diagnostics in Polluted Gas-Insulated Switchgear

One of the most serious problems that cause the failure of the Gas insulated substations is the presence of contaminating particles inside its compartments as it adversely affects the withstand capability of the system. In this paper diagnosis of particles presence based on the detection of time-to-discharge is presented. This is based on the fact that the probability distributions of discharge times uniquely identify particle condition scenarios. For the first time multiple particles are dealt with. In testing a given gas insulated apparatus, the probability distribution of the mean time of discharge is to be experimentally monitored and can then act as the basis for such diagnosis.
