Performance Analysis of Non-Conventional Distance Protection and Phase Selection Algorithms in Transmission Lines Little Longer than Half- Wavelength

This work presents a performance analysis of non-conventional distance protection algorithm and phase selector in transmissions lines little longer than half-wavelength. Real and ideal transposition were considered for the Bergeron and JMarti line models. Simulations were performed in Alternative Transient Program under phase-to-ground and phase-to-phase solid short circuits. The voltage and current signals were emulated and applied to a commercial relay by a programmable test set. Unconventional algorithms were implemented in MATLAB with the objective of comparing and supporting the results obtained. An appropriate performance of the commercial relay was observed for faults applied up to approximately 514 km from the sending of the transmission line. The unconventional distance protection algorithm implemented showed effectiveness for faults applied up to approximately 1028 km, while the unconventional phase selection algorithm proved to be adequate for faults applied throughout the whole line extension.
