Indian Ocean Observation program - Two Decades of Service to the Society

Indian moored surface buoy(IMSB) observation network is continuously reporting the valuable atmospheric, surface and sub-surface oceanographic data and the system is being upgraded with the latest technological improvements for increased precision in spacio-temporal measurements. IMSB is also augmented with tsunameter for tsunami early warning applications at tsunamigenic locations. The location of observing network ranges from coastal, deep sea and polar region. IMSBs are also equipped with camera and surveillance system at few locations. The buoy systems are incorporated with state of the art technology features such as automatic high frequency data mode during cyclone, simultaneous interface to multiple telemetry system, intelligent power management module etc. The IndARC mooring deployed at Kongsfjorden, Arctic has helped in understanding the teleconnection between the Indian monsoon and influence of polar region. Various components of the IMSB including the intelligent data acquisition system are indigenized and functioning continuously at harsh marine environment conditions.The data from these buoy systems has helped in providing precise information on approaching cyclone and tsunamis. This paper briefs the experiences on sustaining moored buoy systems in tropical and polar region, interface of multiple energy sources for powering buoy system and extensive information on bio fouling and its preventive measures followed. The Mean Time Between Failure (MTBF) value of buoy system was improved from 1 year in 2010 to 12 years in 2013 by continuous performance monitoring and corrective action cum technology improvement methodology. Apart from maintenance of buoy systems, the paper also describes efforts on development of products for ocean observation which are available for transfer of technology to industry for large scale commercialization.
