Characteristics of Observed Internal Waves in the Straits of Florida

Study and analysis of velocity, temperature and conductivity data recently acquired in the Straits of Florida over a period of time are described, in support of identifying presence of internal waves in the flow. The velocity profiles were measured using two Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers (ADCPs), bottom mounted in 260m water depth. The temperature and conductivity data are from periodic conductivity-temperature-depth (CTD) casts from a surface ship and previous CTD data gathered from gliders (Todd, 2016). The spectra of the measured velocity time series at the site are compared to the Garrett-Munk spectrum, which provides the framework for confirming presence of internal wave activity.
