Research on emergency control strategy of synchronous condenser for inhibiting wind turbine tripping in sending-end network

Wind power has been developed rapidly in the last decade which solves the energy and environmental problem but also brings some issues to power grid. Large-scale wind farms tripping results in severe system oscillation and aggravates the transient instability. In addition, the faults of HVDC can lead to wind turbine tripping such as commutation failure. Therefore, synchronous compensator has been installed widely to solve the reactive power support problem and reduce the risk of HVRT (High Voltage Ride Through) of wind turbine in sending-end network. However, under the traditional control mode, synchronous compensator cannot play a role completely and may aggravate the tripping of wind turbine. This paper proposed an optimization emergency control strategy of synchronous compensator which is triggered by the information of faults of HVDC and into low or forced excitation state during a period of time. In the end, the paper verifies the feasibility of the strategy by an actual power grid simulation case.
