Design and Implementation of a VGA Controller Using Complex Programmable Logic Devices

A design of VGA controller using Complex Programmable Logic Devices, static random access memory and VGA port has been presented in this paper. VGA (video designs cluster) is an array of visual standard presented during the period of 1980s by IBM in their Personal Computers and is broadly upheld in illustrations equipment1and screens. Regarding this project, the CPLD will be our main processing unit. Here wetalk about the plan of a fundamental eight-color640-by-480determination interface for CRT (cathoderaytube) screens. This resolution would have 25MHz of pixel rate and a clock period of 40ns. The VGA controller will have the synchronization and the pixel generation circuit as its main components. The SRAM will also be used in our project with a capacity of 256Kx16 to store the data. Finally the interfacing of CPLD with a monitor will be done using a VGA port with five active signals - red, green, blue beam as the video signal and the h _sync and the v _sync as the synchronization signals. The cathode ray tube screen is discussed and its working has also been explained. Then the systematic design and configuration of our proposed system is discussed. The functional and non-functional requirements and specifications are considered and discussed as well. Finally, the paper concludes with VGA controller design and its simulation for the display system.
