Computational Fluid Dynamics Simulation of the Sputnik Pediatric Rotary Blood Pump

The goal of this study was computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation of the blood flow in the Sputnik pediatric rotary blood pump (Sputnik PRBP) for use in pediatric cardiac surgery. Three-dimensional model of Sputnik PRBP was prepared. An anatomical assessment of the pediatric pump was done based on the MRI scans results of patients in 4-5 years age group. CFD studies used for construction the head pressure-flow rate (H-Q) curves at the range of 1-6 l/min and 20-160 mmHg. The comparison flow patterns of the Sputnik PRBP and adult ventricular assist device (VAD) Sputnik at the operating point according 2.4 l/min and head pressure equal to 75-80 mmHg was carried out. To estimate the influence of the pumps on the flow, the values of the residence time of the particles and the wall shear stress in the pediatric and adult pumps were obtained.
