EMC Design and Development Methodology for Traction Power Inverters of Electric Vehicles

A car manufacturer generally requires compliance with component-level electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) requirements. However, some countermeasures may be necessary due to differences in electromagnetic circumstances even if the requirements are complied with. The objective of this study is to establish a methodology for EMC design by predicting the vehicle-level radiated emissions in the early stages of component development. The technical challenge in performing vehicle-level EMC analysis is handling a wide dynamic range, from the inverter output to the emissions. In this study, the vehicle-level EMC analysis has been divided into three steps that calculate the output current, the common mode current, and the antenna voltage separately so that the each dynamic range can be reduced. Model validation achieved by comparing the measurement results using actual electric vehicles is also studied. With this analysis, designing the EMC of both vehicles and components can be realized.
