Output Power Control of a Surface Mounted Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generator Coupled with Electronic Capacitor System

In this paper, we propose to control the output power of a surface mounted permanent magnet generator connected to a load with a three phase Magnetic Energy Recovery Switch system (MERS). Each switch consists of four MOSFET or IGBT elements and one capacitor working at machine frequency. Both effects of switch parameter, capacitor value and control variable are described and analyzed with a system model and verified by Finite Element Method (FEM) simulations. It is shown that output power can be not only well modulated but also increased significantly, compared with standard series inverter solution. Also, an optimum operating point can be found regardless of load. A discussion about possible drawbacks of such system is finally done.
