Development of a Portable Femtosecond-Laser-Driven Ultrashort Voltage Pulse Standard with a Footprint of 25 × 30 cm2

We describe the development of a portable laser-based voltage pulse standard for the V and W band providing a pulse width of a few picoseconds and frequency components significantly exceeding 100 GHz. The device has a very small footprint and allows easy handling. It is based on femtosecond laser technology and ultrafast photodiodes, both of which are commercially available. Realization of the device is accomplished in two steps: (i) characterization of ultrafast photodiodes in a stationary system using femtosecond electro-optic sampling techniques and (ii) integration of the characterized photodiodes into a small box together with a small femtosecond laser module. Such portable standards are ideal devices for waveform metrology and calibration tasks at both, national metrology institutes and industry.
