An EMC Education Program for Non - Electric/Electronics Background Engineers

The number of engineers unfamiliar with elec-tric/electronics engineering is on the increase in various fields applying such techniques. Their knowledge/understanding of electromagnetic phenomena is, in many cases, incomplete because they are only based on the concept of direct current circuit theory. This paper presents a proposed education program given to such engineers at the University of Electro-Communications, Japan. The program course is carried on the basis that various problems of electromagnetic compatibility can be explained using the concepts of electromagnetism or electromagnetic (EM) field theory. The course emphasizes that voltage and current in the scalar domain are defined as special conditions of EM fields in the vector domain, and circuit elements are also defined in the EM-field concept. The circuit laws in terms of voltage and current correspond to the equivalent in EM field theory. It should be noted that voltage and current traveling in transmission lines are in the form of waves, and essentially EM fields carry energy. Some unique models of the program are shown as examples.
