Self-powered pulse sensors with high sensitivity to reveal sinus arrhythmia

This work reports a self-powered pulse sensor based on cellular piezoelectret with high sensitivity to record pulse waveforms and reveal sinus arrhythmia as a practical medical microsystem. The high sensitivity is maintained within a large range of applied pressure (10-120 mmHg) while an optical pulse sensor fails to perform. As such, coupling with big data analyses, this pulse detection system could enable modern health diagnosis for various conditions following the traditional Chinese medicine practices. We show the diagnostics of sinus arrhythmia as the demonstration example in this work.
